Halloween crafting is all about having a little fun with the fright! Where else can witches, skeletons, runaway eyeballs, and dogs dressed as ghosts all happily share the spotlight? Simon Hurley’s new Halloween collection for Spellbinders is filled with quirky characters and just the right mix of spooky and silly—and I had so much fun playing with these new designs.

Eye Love You!
The Bad to the Bone set gave me an excuse to get a little silly—and to pull out the googly eyes!
I stamped the jars of eyeballs in gold on black cardstock and arranged them across a textured black background. One of the jars has even tipped over and spilled its collection of eyes across the card.
Of course, once I started adding googly eyes, it was difficult to stop. A few escaped from the jars altogether and found their way around the background!
The little “Eye Love You” sentiment was the perfect finishing touch. This one definitely falls into the more fun than frightening category of Halloween cards.

Magic in the Air
Next came Hocus Pocus, and what would Halloween be without a witch flying through the night sky?
For this card, I created a softly blended background in shades of purple and blue with a glowing yellow moon behind the witch. I love the contrast of the bright green witch against the darker background.
The flock of black bats really makes this card for me. Rather than keeping everything centered around the witch, the bats sweep diagonally across the card, giving the whole scene a sense of movement—as though we’re catching our witch right in the middle of her nighttime flight.
A few clear sequins add just a touch of sparkle, and the “Magic in the Air” sentiment finishes the scene.

Frightfully Fabulous
The characters in Framed Fright have so much personality that I wanted them to be the stars of this card.
I colored the skeleton couple and placed the stylish lady inside the ornate frame, creating a wonderfully peculiar family-portrait effect. Her hat, sunglasses, pearls and blue dress are such fun details, while her dapper companion looks quite handsome in his hat, jacket and bow tie.
I kept the background black so the characters would stand out but gave it some texture using the Simon Hurley’s Spellbinder’s 3D Embossing Folder Bark. Then I scattered a few clear sequins around them for just a little shine.
And really, could there be a better sentiment for this pair than “You Are Frightfully Fabulous”?

Happy Howl-o-ween!
Finally, I changed direction completely with the Halloween Pets set.
These little dogs dressed in ghost costumes are just too cute to be scary!
Instead of making a traditional flat card, I used a folded design that gives the card an extra panel and lets the images continue around the card. The orange patterned papers keep everything bright and cheerful, while the stamped dogs provide plenty of Halloween personality.
I especially love the larger pup carrying his little jack-o’-lantern treat bucket. The sentiments “Happy Howl-o-ween,” “Boo!” and “Trick or Treat!” carry the theme across the different sections of the card.
Tiny orange embellishments scattered throughout add just enough sparkle without competing with those adorable trick-or-treaters.
This collection is quite a Halloween party!
The Hocus Pocus, Bad to the Bone, Framed Fright, and Halloween Pets Stamp & Die Bundles by Simon Hurley for Spellbinders offer lots of possibilities for mixing spooky with silly—and I definitely leaned toward the silly side.
So pull out the purple, orange, green and black cardstock, add a little sparkle (and perhaps a generous supply of googly eyes!), and have some Halloween fun.
Happy crafting—and Happy Howl-o-ween! 🎃🐾👻
